As we start the new year, a healthier lifestyle is a common aspiration, especially as we age. I have worked very hard to make my lifestyle change and better my health. Lifestyle change is so hard and many find it surprisingly challenging to make lasting changes to their eating habits and exercise routines. In this article, I want to share some factors that contribute to the difficulty of embracing a healthier lifestyle after the age of fifty.
Habits Die Hard:
“Old habits die hard” reflects the challenge many face when trying to break away from deeply ingrained behaviors. Remember it took years to get to where you may be today, so it may take years to reverse your behavior. Overcoming these habits often requires a combination of self-awareness, determination, and strategies to establish new, healthier routines. Breaking free from the comfort of familiar routines, including dietary choices and sedentary behaviors, can be an uphill battle. In my experience I found that constant focus and taking it one day at a time helped me.
Our metabolic changes are a natural part of aging and can contribute to the difficulty of maintaining or achieving a healthy weight. I felt a big shift at age 45. As we age, our metabolism tends to slow down, making it easier to gain weight and harder to lose it. Understanding these shifts is crucial when considering lifestyle changes, as it highlights the need for adjustments in diet and exercise routines to accommodate the body’s evolving needs. Exploring these changes can shed light on why individuals may find it more difficult to maintain or lose weight through diet and exercise alone. The impact of family and friends can either support or hinder efforts to adopt healthier habits. Positive social support can provide motivation, accountability, and a sense of community, making it easier to embrace a new lifestyle. On the other hand, societal pressures and unhealthy social norms may pose challenges. Addressing and cultivating a supportive social environment is key to successful and sustainable lifestyle changes. These social circles play a significant role in shaping our behaviors. Surround yourself with people that support your plan and provide you with a positive influence or a coach to help you.
Shifting my mindset was the key for my lasting lifestyle changes. Transitioning from a short-term fix mentality to a long-term commitment is essential. Please take the word “diet” out of your vocabulary. Embrace a positive outlook, focus on gradual progress, and celebrate small victories. Cultivating self-discipline, resilience, and a belief in one’s ability to change are key elements. A growth mindset, where challenges are viewed as opportunities for growth, can empower individuals to overcome obstacles and sustain healthy habits over time. Working with others and including myself, I see that a change of mindset is one of the most positive things we can do to create a lifestyle change.
Life’s coping mechanisms often involve behaviors like eating and sedentary habits, serving as ways to cope with stress and challenges. Identifying these emotional connections is crucial for understanding why certain habits are deeply ingrained. Exploring healthier coping mechanisms, such as mindfulness, exercise, or hobbies, provides alternatives for managing stress and emotions. By addressing the root causes of using specific coping strategies, individuals can make positive changes to lead a healthier and more balanced life. Unraveling the emotional connections to these habits is integral to understanding the resistance to change. I found that exercising helped me relieve some of the stresses of the day. Exploring healthier coping mechanisms and stress management strategies can be transformative in this journey.
Changing our lifestyle after the age of fifty is undeniably challenging, but understanding the underlying factors can empower individuals to overcome these obstacles. By addressing habits, metabolic changes, social influences, mindset, and coping mechanisms, we can pave the way for a healthier, more fulfilling life in our golden years. Embracing change may be difficult, but with awareness and determination, it’s an achievable and rewarding endeavor. I found that studying more about my diabetes, about keto lifestyles, healthier recipes and how to exercise properly helped me keep my mind moving in the right direct.
